She was breathing heavily, panting as the joy, the relief, the colossal happiness flooded over her. “It worked.”

“Yes, it worked.”

She threw her arms around him and, unable to help herself, she sobbed uncontrollably against his chest.

“Shh,” he said, gently rocking her in his arms. “Don’t cry.”

She lifted her head and met his eyes. “I love you,” she said. “I don’t think I even really know what that means, but…it’s how I feel.” She smiled at him through her tears, so immensely happy to be with him again. “I love you, Arien.”

“I know you do,” he said, wiping her tears away. “And I love you, Lila. Don’t worry. We’ll figure it out.”

“You can stay this time?” she asked. “Promise me that you can ’cause I don’t know if I could it take if you left again.”

“Yes, I can stay. I promise.”

“Forever?”

“Until you release me,” he said, stroking her cheek with his knuckles. “That’s how summoning works. I get called and I carry out the will of my Master. Mostly.” He grinned at her, and she thought she would never get enough of that terrible, wicked, beautiful grin. “You know.”

“Yeah,” she said. “I know how well you take orders.”

“Exactly. And then, once the bargain is complete, I am released.”

“But I don’t want to release you.”

Arien laughed. “I know you don’t, sweetheart. Our bargain will be of an ongoing nature. But, Lila, there is a price for what you did. Black magic is not without its consequences.”

“What kind of consequences?” she asked, very worried.

“Well, now that you’ve compelled me to be with you, you’re stuck with me. I’m going to return your love a thousandfold. I’ll be possessive, obsessive and very, very needy. In fact, I think I’m going to need to make love to you several times a night, every single night.”

“Huh,” she said, pleased and thrilled and very excited by the prospect. “That’s quite a price.”

“You don’t know the half of it. We’re going to be together for a long, long time, my dear. One of my many talents is granting long life, eternal youth and beauty. Usually, I charge humans their souls for such gifts, but for you…” His gaze roamed over her, a heated, provocative caress all its own. “We’ll work something special out.”

Lila’s grin was wide enough to be a match for his. “Didn’t I do a personal-gain, greedy kind of spell? I’ve imposed my will upon you, haven’t I? Doesn’t that mean you should be all submissive and eager and stuff?”

“Oh, but I am,” he said, drawing her back against his chest. “You’ll see.”

Lila laughed, hugging him tightly. “I can’t wait.”
