“Hmm,” he hummed, looking over toward my table. “How’d you find that loser?” he asked.

I turned and looked at the table. My laptop was still sitting there, and Tommy’s social media profile was still displayed, with a big picture of him staring right back at us.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“That dumbass on your computer screen,” J.R. said, eating his noodles. “That’s the guy I was telling you about… Gigi’s unruly boyfriend—the one we had to kick out of the event at the hotel last year.”

I felt my stomach turn, and it wasn’t because of the day-old Chinese food I’d just put in it.

“That’s him?” I asked, making sure I had things straight.

“Sure is,” J.R. answered. “No doubt about it. I’d recognize him anywhere.”

My heart and my mind were both racing. I didn’t know how to respond to this new information—but I knew that J.R. couldn’t be there when I did. I had to sort through this on my own before I could share it with him.

“J.R.,” I said, walking over to the table. I shut my laptop lid with a snap. “I know this is going to sound weird, but there’s some stuff I need to take care of… What just happened between us was intense and awesome—but we both know we can’t let it get in the way of what else we have to do… and, right now, there are some things I
really
need to do.”

J.R. looked at me curiously, perhaps suspiciously. “Okay,” he said with a breath of hesitation. “I don’t understand your abrupt change in mood… but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt here.” He set down his container of food and put his fork in the sink.

“Really, it’s nothing bad,” I said. “Just whenever we came in here and started talking about things again, I was reminded that I had stuff I needed to do today… Time sensitive stuff.”

“Okay,” J.R. said again. He didn’t look too happy with what I’d said, but he accepted it and returned to the living room to gather his belongings.

“I’ll call you later,” he said, coming over to give me a kiss on my forehead. Believe it or not, I was still naked—though I didn’t feel vulnerable until that point.

“All right,” I said, ducking behind the door as he left. “I’ll talk to you then.”

I stood by the door for a moment and listened as J.R.’s feet beat down the hallway, then I made a beeline to my desk and grabbed my phone.

I need to see you
, I swiped with my fingers.
I’m coming over now.

I set down my phone, went into my bedroom, and tried to find the perfect outfit for my impromptu meeting with Tommy.
